Frequently Asked Questions

EXPO | TICKBASE | STUDENT EDITION

You can become fully licensed to EXPO/SE just by downloading the software and going through our simple academic grant program. Please spread the word to your student friends, colleagues and faculty.

If you have any technical questions you may email them to LMT@LMTECH.COM. We will endeavor to respond to all questions in a timely manner. We hope you enjoy EXPO/SE, and don't forget to mention this offer to your friends!

What is EXPO?

EXPO is a powerful data analysis and display package, used by traders and analysts at major Wall Street firms and around the world. It is often described as a "data analysis worksheet" or "time series and matrix worksheet."

What's the first step in using EXPO/SE?

The first step is to get some data into a window. With EXPO/SE you can access time series data from the internet, from files, or by copying and pasting from other applications such as Excel. The quickest way to bring data into EXPO/SE is to type IBM and then the Enter key. Alternatively, to put a series from EXPO/SE's Historical Databank into a window, go to the "Data" menu and select "EXPO/Web" or "Historical Databank" and choose any item from any category. Note that you can highlight any line in an EXPO/SE panel menu by typing the first letter of that line.

You can also use the Import command on the Data menu to import almost any ASCII file of time series data into EXPO/SE. For more information on bringing data into EXPO/SE, see 'Getting Started with EXPO/SE' or the Help pulldown menu.

How can I get a closer look at the data?

You can zoom an EXPO window by clicking the zoom button on the toolbar (the button with the light blue zooming box), triple clicking in the plotting area of the window, or pressing the F10 key.

You can also magnify one area of the window with the magnifying glass button. The magnifying glass button is part of the toolbar for activated windows, which will be visible only if a window is active. One way you can make a window active is by double clicking inside it. You can also make a window active by zooming it. You can also scroll or expand/compress your series with the arrow buttons and VCR buttons. To return the series to its original appearance, use the diamond-inside-the-square-button.

Can I move through the data point-by-point? Can I look at the numbers in tabular form?

You can access the Data Cursor with the F9 key or the blue cursor button. You can move the cursor point-by-point with the arrow keys or move it longer distances with the mouse. As you move the cursor, EXPO displays the series values. You can click on the cursor button again to insert another cursor. In this case, the first cursor will freeze on its last position.

Use the graph-styles toggle button (the button with the black bar graph and red plot line) or the F7 key to view the data in other plot styles.

Does EXPO/SE come with built-in studies?

Yes. For information on built-in studies, loot at EXPO/SE's Studies pulldown menu, Analyze pulldown menu, and 'Getting Started with EXPO/SE' help.

What else can I do with my data, once I have it in an EXPO/SE window?

EXPO/SE includes hundreds of functions, ranging from very simple to very complex. We'll start with a few simple ones. Use the directions above to bring one series into EXPO/SE's Window 1 and one series into EXPO/SE's Window 2 (W1 and W2). Choose two series with the same start date and the same periodicity (e.g. both daily, both weekly, both monthly, both quarterly or both annual).

Now click the mouse once in a blank window, such as Window 3, and type: =W1/W2 and the hit the carriage return. (Type a carriage return at the end of each statement this FAQ asks you to type.)
(Until you hit the carriage return, what you type will appear at the top of the EXPO/SE screen, not in the window where you are typing.)
Now go to Window 4 and type =W1-W2 and then go to Window 5 and type =W1/Delay(W1,1)
To learn more about DELAY, pull down the Help menu and choose "EXPO Functions". The "Delay" command is located under "Coordinate Manipulation". To learn about any other EXPO/SE function, you can use the "EXPO Functions" option on the Help menu. The help menu allows you to look at a list of function categories, or you can search for a function by name.

But my worksheet only has four windows!

From the "Windows" pulldown menu, select "Add." You can have a total of 12 windows in EXPO/SE.
